The BitBox02 hardware wallet supports BIP-85, allowing you to generate multiple independent wallets—called child keys—from one master seed. Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating these wallets safely and efficiently.
Step 1: Connect your BitBox02
- Open the BitBoxApp on your computer.
- Connect your BitBox02 device via USB.
- Enter your device password if prompted.
Step 2: Open device settings
- In the BitBoxApp, navigate to Settings.
- Select Manage device.
Step 3: Access the BIP-85 feature
- Scroll to the Expert settings section.
- Click on Show BIP-85 child keys.

Step 4: Learn about BIP-85
- The app will display an explanation of how BIP-85 works.
- Read the information carefully to understand how child keys function.
- Check the box: “I understand how child keys work and the security considerations.”
- Continue to the next step.
Step 5: Confirm derivation
- The BitBox02 will prompt you: “Derive BIP-39 mnemonic?”
- Confirm this prompt on your device.
Step 6: Choose your parameters
- You’ll now select the parameters for the child key you want to generate:
- Number of recovery words: Choose between 12, 18, or 24 words.
- Index number: This number allows you to recreate the same child key later. Make sure to keep track of it.
- Keypath confirmation: BitBox02 will show you the keypath being used. Confirm it on the device.
Step 7: Record the child key securely
- The BitBox02 will display the generated mnemonic phrase (child key).
- Write it down and store it securely—this phrase grants full access to the child wallet.
Note: If you use the same number of words and index number again, the BitBox02 will generate the exact same child key.
Step 8: Use your new wallet
- You can now import the child key (mnemonic phrase) into any wallet that supports BIP-39 recovery phrases.
This gives you full access to a completely separate wallet, derived from your master seed.
