Update the BitBoxApp to receive the latest security improvements, compatibility updates, bug fixes, and features. You can update the app without connecting your BitBox.
On Windows, macOS, and supported Linux installations, you normally update the BitBoxApp by installing the latest version over the existing one. On Android, iPhone, and iPad, updates are normally managed by the app store. The Linux AppImage is a standalone file and must be replaced with the latest version.
An update never requires your wallet secrets
Updating the BitBoxApp never requires recovery words, a wallet backup, a microSD card, a private key, or an optional passphrase. Never enter wallet secrets into the BitBoxApp, a website, a computer, a phone, a form, a chat, or an AI tool. If an alleged update asks for them, stop: it is not the legitimate BitBoxApp update process.
Check whether your BitBoxApp needs an update
- Open the BitBoxApp.
- Open Settings and select About.
- Note the installed BitBoxApp version.
- Compare it with the latest stable version in the official BitBoxApp releases.
If the versions match, the BitBoxApp is already up to date. If the installed version is older, use the method for your operating system below.
If you are unsure whether your device or operating system is compatible, check the supported devices and operating systems for the BitBoxApp first.
Update the BitBoxApp
Windows
Download the latest Windows installer from the official BitBoxApp download page and run it. The installer normally updates the existing BitBoxApp, so you do not need to uninstall the previous version first.
For the complete installation workflow, follow Install the BitBoxApp on Windows.
macOS
Download the latest macOS disk image from the official BitBoxApp download page. Open the disk image and replace the existing BitBoxApp in the Applications folder when macOS asks.
For the complete workflow, follow Install the BitBoxApp on macOS.
Linux
If you installed a DEB or RPM package, download and install the latest matching package from the official BitBoxApp download page. It normally updates the existing installation.
If you use the AppImage, download the latest AppImage and use it instead of the older file. An AppImage does not update itself.
Continue with Install the BitBoxApp on Linux or Run the BitBoxApp AppImage on Linux, depending on your installation type.
Android
If you installed the BitBoxApp through Google Play, open its Google Play listing and select Update when that option is available.
If you installed it without Google Play, download the latest APK only from an official BitBox source and install it over the existing version. Follow Install or update the BitBoxApp APK on Android.
iPhone and iPad
Open the BitBoxApp listing in the Apple App Store and select Update when that option is available. See Install or update the BitBoxApp on iPhone and iPad for the complete workflow and compatibility requirements.
Confirm that the update completed
- Open the updated BitBoxApp.
- Open Settings → About.
- Compare the displayed version with the latest stable version in the official BitBoxApp releases.
BitBoxApp update completed
The update is complete when the BitBoxApp opens normally and Settings → About shows the current stable version.
An in-place update normally keeps your BitBoxApp accounts, settings, and watch-only wallets. Updating the app does not move cryptocurrency or change the wallet controlled by your BitBox.
If the BitBoxApp does not update or open
Use the troubleshooting article for your operating system:

Do not disable operating-system or endpoint security controls merely to complete an update. If the downloaded file fails a checksum or signature check, do not open or install it. Download it again from the official source and follow the procedures to verify the BitBoxApp checksum or verify the BitBoxApp signature.
BitBoxApp and firmware updates are separate
Updating the BitBoxApp does not automatically update the firmware on your BitBox. After the app update, connect and unlock your BitBox. If compatible new firmware is available, the BitBoxApp offers that update separately.
