The BitBox02 Multi edition can be used with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks supported by a compatible external wallet. Ethereum mainnet and selected ERC-20 tokens are available directly in the BitBoxApp. The firmware identifies selected EVM networks by name, while other EVM networks trigger an additional warning before a transaction can be signed.

This article applies to the BitBox02 Multi edition. The BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition does not support Ethereum or other EVM networks.


How EVM compatibility works

Three different forms of support are easy to confuse. The distinction determines where you manage your assets and what your BitBox02 can identify on its screen.

Native BitBoxApp support You can view and manage Ethereum mainnet and selected ERC-20 tokens directly in the BitBoxApp.
External-wallet compatibility You use a compatible external wallet to view balances and create transactions on other EVM networks. Your BitBox02 keeps the private keys and signs approved requests.
Firmware network recognition The firmware can identify selected networks by name before showing the transaction details. Other EVM networks trigger an additional warning.

A network can therefore be compatible through an external wallet without being available in the BitBoxApp. It can also be compatible even when the firmware does not yet recognize the network by name.

The BitBoxApp displays selected ERC-20 tokens below the Ethereum account. These are tokens on Ethereum mainnet, not separate EVM networks. To display or hide them, see how to manage ERC-20 tokens in the BitBoxApp.


Which EVM networks can I use with the BitBox02?

You can use the BitBox02 Multi edition with EVM-compatible networks supported by a compatible external wallet. This includes widely used networks such as Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Smart Chain, OP Mainnet, and Polygon PoS.

The external wallet must support both the BitBox02 connection and the network you want to use. An EVM network can therefore be usable even when the BitBox02 firmware does not identify it by name.


Which EVM networks does the firmware recognize by name?

This is not a complete list of EVM networks that can be used with the BitBox02. It shows the public EVM networks that the current firmware can identify by name:

  • Arbitrum One
  • Base
  • BNB Smart Chain
  • Ethereum
  • Fantom Opera
  • Gnosis Chain
  • HyperEVM
  • OP Mainnet
  • Polygon PoS
  • Sonic

The firmware also recognizes Sepolia, an Ethereum test network.

Older firmware may recognize fewer networks and may therefore show an unknown-network warning for a network in this list. Keep your BitBox02 firmware up to date through the current BitBoxApp.

Firmware recognition does not make a network available in the BitBoxApp, guarantee compatibility with every wallet or decentralized application, or represent an endorsement or security review of the network.


What the Unknown chain ID warning means

On current firmware, an unrecognized chain ID produces the message “Unknown network with chain ID: [number]”, followed by “Only proceed if you recognize this chain ID.” This is often referred to as an Unknown chain ID warning.

A chain ID is simply a network's numeric identifier; you do not need to memorize it during normal use. The warning means that the firmware cannot identify the selected network from its built-in list. It does not prove that the network or transaction is unsafe, but it also does not verify that either one is legitimate.

Never approve an unexpected network warning

If you did not intentionally select the network, or you cannot independently verify the network and transaction details, reject the request. Do not continue merely because an external wallet or website tells you that the warning is safe to ignore.

 

If you expected the warning, use this checklist before you approve the transaction:

  1. Confirm that you intentionally selected the correct network in the external wallet.
  2. Use the network's official documentation to verify that the numeric chain ID shown on your BitBox02 belongs to that network.
  3. Verify every transaction detail shown on your BitBox02, including the recipient, amount, and fee where applicable.
  4. Reject the request if any detail is unexpected, missing, or unclear.

Rejecting the request does not move any funds. You can check the external wallet's network settings and start again after you have verified the correct network.
